Pavlovsk is a wonderful palace-and-park ensemble of late XVIII-beginning of XIX century, which was a summer residence of emperor Paul the first and his family. It is one of the largest landscape parks in Europe—its area is more than 600 hectares. Palace ensemble was built within 50 years on the bank of winding Slavyanka river according to projects of architects Ch. Cameron, V. Brennah, J. Quarengui, A. Voronihin, C. Rossi and sculptors M. Kozlovsky, I. Martos, I. Prokofyev, F. Gordeev and G. Demut-Malinovsky.
Collections of Pavlovsky palace were formed of the objects, purchased by owners of Pavlovsk during their trips to Europe in 1781-1782. Visiting workshops of famous masters they purchased and ordered paintings, furniture, bronze objects, silk and porcelain, they also brought a great number of Italian sculptures and presents of European royal families.
The museum houses a marvelous collection of Russian portrait, paintings and graphics, showing Pavlovsk landscapes. Living rooms of the empress Maria Fyodorovna, unique in their beauty and harmony, decorated in the beginning of XIX century according to the projects of architects J. Quarengui and A. Voronihin, are opened to the public after long perioud of reconstruction works.
